In Vitro Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activity of Extracts from Morus alba L. Leaves, Stems and Fruits

In this study, the aqueous and ethanolic extracts (leaves, stems and fruits) from Morus alba L., a traditional Chinese medicine, were evaluated for their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Ethanolic extracts showed higher contents of both total phenolics and flavonoids than aqueous extracts. The total phenolic content was in the order of: leaf extracts > fruit extracts > stem extracts, whereas the total flavonoids was: leaf extracts > stem extracts > fruit extracts. Cyprodinil is among the most common agrochemical residues found in highly perishable fruits, such as strawberries. In the present study, high-affinity monoclonal antibodies to this anilinopyrimidine fungicide were raised for the first time with the aim to produce valuable immunochemical analytical assays. Cyprodinil bioconjugates and the generated novel monoclonal antibodies were employed for sensitive competitive immunoassay development in two different formats. Autophagic cell death induced by Litchi fruit extracts in human colon cancer cells.

Litchi chinensis is a tropical fruit which cultivation has been recently introduced in Sicily. Some findings have shown that Litchi extracts display antitumor effects but the underlying mechanisms have not been elucidated. This study focuses on the effects of Litchi hydro-alcoholic extracts in colorectal cancer cells. The results indicated that Litchi exocarp (peel), mesocarp (pulp) and endocarp (seeds) extracts reduce the viability of HT-29 colon cancer cells in a dose dependent manner. This effect was accompanied with G2/M arrest of the cell cycle followed by cell death.
